Spotting Scam Messages Impersonating Your Bank or Credit Union

That text? That call? They say they're your financial institution, but they just might not be.

Scammers are getting bold and pretty convincing. They’ll text, email, or even call pretending to be your financial institution (FI). They might even spoof your FI’s number or make it look like a legit message. But here’s the thing: just because it looks real doesn’t mean it is.

Let’s break down the red flags and what DFCU Financial will never do.

Common Scam Messages:

“Suspicious activity on your card. Click this link to secure your account.”
Fake. That link? Usually takes you to a look-a-like site to steal your login info.

“Your account has been locked. Confirm your credentials here.”
Also fake. This is how scammers get access to your account... and your money.

“We noticed unusual activity. What’s your full card number and PIN?”
BIG fake. We'll never ask for your full card number, PIN, or online banking password by text, email, or phone.

“You’ve won a reward from DFCU! Enter your account info to claim.”
Nice try. While we do have sweepstakes, we won’t ask you for your account information to claim any prizes. After all, we contacted you. Wouldn’t we already have that info?

To recap, DFCU Financial will never:

- Ask for your full Social Security number, PIN, or password by phone, text, or email.

- Ask you to click shady links to “secure” your account.

- Threaten to close your account unless you act right now.

- Send you to a non-DFCU website for account access.

If you ever get a message that seems off, stop and take a breath. Don’t click anything. Don’t call the number they give you. Call us directly at our Member Service Center (313.336.2700).
