Two Truths & a Lie

Two Truths and a Lie

Two Truths and a Lie

Let’s play a quick game: Two Truths and a Lie. See if you can spot the fake.

- Scammers often pretend to be your bank to get personal information.

- Legitimate companies will never make spelling or grammar mistakes.

- Phishing scams can happen through email, text, phone calls, or even social media.

Think you spotted the lie?

If you guessed the second one, gold star for you. Scammers may not be English majors, but they’ve got autocorrect on their side. And here’s the kicker: even real companies make spelling and grammar mistakes. Yes, even us. Hey, we’re only human.

A typo or two doesn’t automatically make something fake, and a perfectly polished message doesn't guarantee it’s safe.

That’s why it’s not just about spotting errors. It’s about paying attention to context: how the message is sent, what it’s asking for, and whether it actually makes sense.

How to Spot a Scam

- Check the sender. If it looks off, it probably is. Scammers love pretending to be from trusted sources, like shipping companies, Amazon, insurance providers, loan services, or even your bank. Look closely at the email address, not just the name.

- Don’t click links or download attachments you weren’t expecting. Go directly to the source instead. If it’s real, they’ll be able to confirm it.

- Watch for urgency. “Act now or lose everything” is a scammer’s favorite line. We don’t do panic emails or texts.

- Verify with us directly. If something feels weird, call the Member Service Center (1.313.336.2700). We’ll let you know what’s real.

How to Protect Yourself

- Turn on account alerts.

- Use strong, unique passwords.

- Keep your contact info current, so we can reach you fast if something’s wrong.

- Trust your gut. If it feels off, it probably is.
